From HSUS:
Help Protect Pets in Final Farm Bill -- Next
Chance May Not Be For Another Five Years!
Today, we have a rare chance to
protect pets in Congress –- an opportunity that may not come
again for another 5 years! Please
take action
right away.
Several measures to protect pets are being
considered for inclusion in the final Farm
Bill: measures that would stop the use in research of random
source dogs and cats obtained through "Class B dealers,"
stop the importation of puppies from foreign puppy mills for
commercial sale, strengthen the federal law against
dogfighting, increase the maximum penalties for Animal
Welfare Act (AWA) violations, and require the U.S.
Department of Agriculture to resume providing annual reports
on its AWA enforcement efforts.
TAKE ACTION
Please make brief, polite phone calls to your
federal legislators to urge them to support these critical
measures to protect pets in the final Farm Bill.
-
Senator Richard Burr at (202) 224-3154
-
Senator Elizabeth Dole at (202) 224-6342
-
Representative Mike McIntyre at (202)
225-2731
Making a call is easy. A staff member will
take your message and pass it along to your legislator. When
you call, you can say:
"Hello, my name is [your name] and I am a
constituent from [your town]. I want to urge [legislator's
name] to do everything possible to make sure that the final
Farm Bill includes important measures to protect pets from
theft for use in lab experiments, importation from foreign
puppy mills, dogfighting, and other abuses. These issues are
very important to me. Thank you."
After making your calls,
send a follow-up email
to your federal legislators to
reiterate your support for getting these important pet
protection measures included in the final Farm Bill.
Finally, please be sure to
tell your friends and family
about this rare opportunity and
how they can help, too.
Thank you for all you do for animals.
Sincerely,

American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act
Bill Number:
H.R. 503 & S. 311
HSUS Position:
Support
Legislature Status: In
Session

H.R. 503/S. 311 would end the slaughter of
American horses for human consumption and prohibit their
export for slaughter in other countries.
In
September 2006, this bill—to permanently ban horse
slaughter—passed the House in a landslide, bipartisan
vote of 263-146. In September 2005, the Senate passed a
funding limitation amendment to ban horse slaughter by a
69-28 margin, and this past April the Senate Commerce
Committee passed S. 311 by a 15-7 vote. All three
foreign-owned slaughter plants in the U.S. have been
stopped from slaughtering horses, but the horse
slaughter industry continues to haul American horses to
slaughter in Mexico and Canada. Our horses are forced to
ensure an agonizing transport, and are once they arrive
at the slaughter plant, they are stabbed to death or
suffer multiple gun shots to the head. The American
Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is needed to ensure a
permanent ban on slaughter is enacted.
